Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is an internationally used measure for determining if a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. It's calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²).

BMI Categories

  • Underweight: < 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5 - 24.9
  • Overweight: 25 - 29.9
  • Obese: ≥ 30

BMI Formula

BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²)

Example: 70 kg / (1.75 m)² = 22.9

Important Considerations

  • BMI doesn't directly measure body fat
  • Athletes may have high BMI due to muscle mass
  • Elderly may have different healthy BMI ranges
  • BMI varies by age, gender, and ethnicity

Health Implications

Underweight

  • • Nutritional deficiencies

  • • Fertility issues

Overweight

  • • Severe joint issues
  • • Sleep apnea
